(Business in Cameroon) – To mark the 52nd World Environment Day themed “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” the Société Anonyme des Boissons du Cameroun (SABC), the country’s leading brewer, participated in planting 4,000 trees near Garoua Airport, the regional capital of the North. SABC contributed 1,000 trees to help curb the desert’s advance threatening the Far North and North regions of Cameroon.
In a similar effort, 150 mangrove trees were planted along the banks of the Wouri River in Douala, Cameroon’s economic capital. “In 2023, our Operational Excellence Centers focused on sanitation in the Littoral and Centre regions, collecting plastic waste for recycling, and tree planting in the West and North to combat desertification and enhance drought resilience. In 2024, we continue planting trees, cleaning the environment, and raising awareness about significant environmental impacts,” said Stéphane Descazeaud, SABC’s CEO.
Beyond marking World Environment Day, Descazeaud emphasized that SABC aims to increase its glass packaging production capacity by about 20% by 2030 as a long-term solution to plastic pollution. “This will reduce our environmental impact, aligning with our core values, especially responsibility. We are committed to reducing our PET plastic production. To address this, we installed a 35,000 bottles-per-hour glass line in Yaoundé in 2023, inaugurated in March 2024. We dismantled the PET line in Bafoussam and are replacing it with a glass line set to be operational by the end of the year,” he explained.
